silly question what is this called is it just a cd storage unit. But my main question is how can I just get the lid off as I want to wrap it?

Most dash panels unclip with some moderate force but careful with using anything but fingers or plastic trim tools.
The panel surrounding the gear lever should pull up from clips and then you should be able to see what is securing the compartment and lid
